It does not matter what breed you own — an Afghan hound or a basset hound — as a pet parent, you should know how often you should bathe your dog. The first factor you need to be aware of is the presence of medical conditions. It could dictate how often you have to bathe your dog.
For example, if your dog is clean, there is less chance they would develop severe contact dermatitis because of urine scalding. Skin eruptions are common issues. Senior dogs tend to suffer when they have issues with urination. Geriatric nursing can get complicated for dog parents.
Does your senior dog wear diapers or belly bands? If it is, you may have to bathe them once every day or else clean the spot with a grooming wipe.
You may have to provide medicated baths every week
Does your dog have fungus or a skin allergy of some sort? In that case, medicated baths are necessary to cure the condition. You can give a bath using a medicated shampoo. It will help cure their skin-related problems. Hence, you may have to arrange multiple baths every week.
Certain breeds need more frequent baths than others
The breed to which a dog belongs dictates how often you have to bathe them. In some dog breeds, the bathing has to be regular — for them grooming is a high priority. For example, dogs with double coats, such as Rottweilers need regular baths — at least once every two weeks.
Some dog breeds like Pit bulls have smooth coats. You do not need to wipe or bathe them more than once every three months. Dog breeds like basset hounds have oily skins that may become smelly without grooming. So, these dogs must be bathed frequently every month.
